Cebu-Bohol kayak crossing slated in December

PADDLERS from all over the Philippines are expected to be in Cebu on the first week of December to take part in the Kayak Explore Cebu-Bohol Crossing.

The event will be a three-day (Dec. 4 to 6) 125-km kayak race to be held simultaneously with a flotilla of island hopping eco-adventure tours. The kayak marathon will have three classes, the sit-in tandem, the sit-on-top tandem and the Singles Open.

Boholano Boom Boom Blasts Marbun in Seven

Comebacking Rey 'Boom-Boom' Bautista sends Marangin Marbun crashing to the canvas towards the end of the 7th round to win by TKO and capture the WBC International Interim Featherweight Title at the Waterfront Hotel here tonight.

Bautista, who scored a knockdown over the game Indonesian in the 4th round, first wobbled Marbun with a jab from his rehabilitated left hand and then followed it up with an overhand right as referee Bruce McTavish didn't bother to finish the count to end the contest.

Rey Boom Boom Bautista Seeks Redemption

This has got to be the only thing that fuels the returning Rey ‘Boom Boom’ Bautista, 26-2, as he gears up for another battle in the squared circle. The Bohol native will be fighting Indonesia’s Marangin Marbun for the vacant interim WBC International featherweight title.

This fight should be Bautista’s critical gauge. Does he have what it takes to box again after getting knocked out viciously in his first defeat and being schooled and bullied in the next?

Boxing champ Donaire now Aklan’s adopted son

The province of Aklan welcomed its newly adopted son, world flyweight boxing champion Nonito “Filipino Flash” Donaire Jr., last Friday afternoon. The Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) of Aklan passed a resolution this year adopting the popular boxing figure from Talibon, Bohol.

“Donaire has shown pride and belongingness to Aklanons by publicly declaring in local radio interviews about the family roots of his Filipino-American wife Rachel,” the resolution said.

“It is but fitting for Aklan and her people to give due honor to the sports heroics of the Donaire couple being one of our own and must share the pride and honors that both brought to the Filipino people and prominently to Aklanons,” the SP resolution No. 2009-103 stressed.

Some 24 hours after retaining his International Boxing Federation (IBF) flyweight crown, I had the pleasure of chatting with Nonito Donaire Jr. in an interview arranged by Startalk (portions of which you will get to watch on the show this Saturday at 2:30 p.m. on GMA 7).

Nonito — or Jun-Jun — looked very relaxed seated across me and that wasn’t surprising at all since he had it easy on the day of his fight: He had quickly demolished in a technical knockout American Raul Martinez in the fourth round.

Proud Boholano Donaire Dominates Maldonado

One of boxing's best young champions was back at work and he left little doubt that he is one of the rising stars in the sport in 2007.

The winner of the Upset of the Year" award when he leveled Vic Darchinyan, IBF flyweight king Nonito "The Filipino Flash" Donaire returned to the ring to make his first title defense and he scored a bloody 8th round TKO over Mexico's Luis Maldonado.

The 7 to 1 underdog, who scored a electrifying 5th round TKO over the heavily favored Darchinyan last July, came out blazing against the switch-hitting Maldonado; opening cuts over both of the challenger's eyes in the second round. Maldonado repeatedly returned fire but Donaire's power proved unstoppable and he dropped the challenger near the end of the 7th, after connecting with a hard uppercut followed by a scalding left hook to the chin.
